The Argus DeWitt MTBE and Methanol Conference 2016 will be held on 1-2 June 2016 in Singapore.

The gasoline market is booming on support from higher spending power and demand in the US, Asia-Pacific and Middle East. MTBE remains the blendstock of choice as prices of other components such as aromatics and reformate stay high. Growing gasoline demand in China has also resulted in higher blending demand, while the new gasoline pricing system in China has prompted interest in imports of MTBE amid the low crude price environment.

Dynamics in the methanol industry are being led by a surge in demand for methanol-to-olefins (MTO) production in China. Since 2010, China has added more than 30mn t/yr of methanol demand for olefins production. This level of consumption is expected to nearly double by 2020. But the global market also faces the threat of oversupply as North America emerges as a net exporter with close to 10mn t/yr of new methanol capacity by 2020. At the same time, the recent lifting of sanctions on Iran is likely to lead to higher exports and the revival of several projects.
